8 tracts of music as opposed to stereo (2 tracks or 2 microphones listening). If each section of an orchestra had it's own microphone then we would have at least 6 tracks of music. Brass, strings, percussion, woodwinds, keyboards and bass sounds. Some tape recordings have 8 tracks ( 8 microphones listening). Digital recordings can have as many as they please to unite. Tape is analog which records the spectrum of each note. The sound and the listener can playback any part of the spectrum. Digital is what is placed on the disk and can only be adjusted digitally.
Analog is variable. Digital can placed on a disk in exact minute detail.
