At one time towboats had sounding devices out on the head of their tows to keep track of the depth in front of their tows.
Today Satellites inform the tows of the depth of the water surrounding their tows.
At one time the government received information at each lock of the commodities in the cargo hatches of the towboats.
Today Satellites receive the commodity information as the tow moves up and down the rivers.,
