Then and Now

My wife had a toaster when we got married in 1968. It gave up the ship last year (2008 (died)). So mom went to Walmart and bought a new toaster. It gave up the ship this year (2009).
The first toaster was made by Union Labor and the second toaster was made by slave labor.
I have T shirts made for Sears in the 1970's that are still in good shape other than being two sizes to small and a little gray. The best I can do with new T shirts today is maybe three years.
Quality has gone.
The world is good for business and the workers be damned is in the minds of our executives.
Walmart is the best example of that.
The average working week before Reaganomics was 40 hours with anything over 8 hours overtime. Today the average working week is 33 hours with young mothers working at McDonald's in the mornings and the local hospital at night.
America is good for business and the workers be damned is in the minds of our executives.
Last week when the Republicans won two Governors elections I could see the dollar bills in the eyes of the reporters.

  1. It is an unfortunate thing, but if you make a good quality product that lasts 20, 30, 40 years you won't be buying a replacement very often. It's all about the all mighty dollar and how to collect as many of them as they can by making inferior quality appliances & gadgets.
