Universal health care: I vote Yes

2 comments:

  1. I vote NO because I have excellent healthcare and don't want a thing changed. I don't want the government telling my insurance company that they have to make changes in the way they operate and in what they cover or don't cover. It has worked fine for me.

Jimmy is now covered by a government health plan (Medicare) and they have so many limitations that we sometimes want to cancel it. Medicare won't even let Jimmy pay up front for his own supplies that used to be covered by his old insurance plan. We are constantly fighting with Medicare to get Jimmy's needed urostomy supplies and I can envision that a government run healthcare for all would be a grave mistake to this country if it's anything like the government run Medicare.

I don't have anything against putting all the uninsured people into a medicaid program, if that's what they choose, but I don't think it should be mandatory. Pretty soon EVERY kind of insurance will be mandatory even if it's pet insurance.

  2. I sure am very happy that OUR Medicare and federal Blue Cross/Blue Shield pays every penny of all our health care expenses. Isn't that great? But, we are paying a hefty premium for that type of coverage. Most people couldn't afford what we have. In fact, more than 50,000,000 people in this country have NO insurance and must rely on going to the ER just to be seen by somebody even in cases of non-emergency or do without. Some even must choose between purchasing their medicine and eating.

I don't know what the answer is, but I certainly vote for health care reform because something is just not right with the system.

Point of fact: since going on Medicare, with BC/BS as secondary, our Blue Cross premiums have increased each year more than our COLA and BC/BS only has to pay a fraction of the costs we incur now that Medicare is primary. Now why is that? With health care reform, this situation might be resolved and premiums and co-pays might be reduced for everyone.

I don't know all the answers, but I do know that something is terribly wrong with the system as it is now. The people who are screaming the loudest are the ones who have insurance and want to protect what they have. How would you like to be one of the people who was one step away from bankuptcy just because you were hit with a health care bill you couldn't pay in your lifetime?

I also know that our daughter and SIL, and their three children, are uninsured because they can't afford insurance and are forced to pay cash for health care -- or they do without. Affordable health care coverage (not just Medicaid) should be available for everyone, not just for those who can afford it.

So I say, stop shouting and start listening to our lawmakers. Maybe the shouters just might learn something. Long live free speech.
