About a month ago I decided to place gravel (fish tank gravel) in the bottom of my feeders to keep them well drained. Moisture is bad for bird feeders, the rocks (the blue in the bottom) so far have kept my feeders dry.

Your little birds are probably eating some of that small gravel too for their craws. Or maybe it's just chickens who need to eat small gravel to be able to digest their food.
